How can I influence my off-page SEO?

Listed below are some of the areas where you can directly influence your off-page SEO performance.

Link building

Link building is the most popular off-page SEO method.

By building external links to your website, you are trying to gather as many ‘votes’ as you can so that you can bypass your competitors and rank higher. It's like a vote of confidence and search engines will therefore rank you higher based on that vote.

It is key that the links you build are with good quality sites. High authority sites. These are sites which have a good, strong reputation and depth of knowledge. One link from a high authority site is much better than many links from a bunch of low authority sites.

For example, if you are a member of a trade body you may be able to approach them to perhaps offer something in return for them linking to you.

Social media

Almost everybody has a social media profile either on Facebook, Twitter or Google+. Besides getting social and having fun your social media profiles can positively affect your SEO efforts. The benefit is either direct i.e. more people can find your profile so more people will connect with you and visit your web site or indirect i.e. it’s an extra link pointing to your web site from your profile.

In addition don’t forget that all social media platforms have their own internal search engine (for example Facebook Graph Search) which is based on the information provided in your profile. So if you have a well-defined profile more people will find you searching within Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or Pinterest.

Google+

Make sure your website has a Google+ page and make sure you're sharing your content via this channel.

It's very likely that Google uses its own social channel as a signifier for ranking content higher when it's shared via the channel and achieved a certain number of +1s.

Local SEO

Local SEO has grown significantly over the last few years, particularly given the rise of smartphone usage and better connectivity while out and about.

Local SEO is focused on providing results that are relevant to a searcher based on their current location.

To make your website more local search friendly make sure you claim your Google Places for Business www.google.com/business complete all the relevant information and then link it to your Google+ local page.
